When looking to buy or sell a home, it may be tempting to go it alone or even use a new agent you may casually know. While it’s possible to get a deal done, either way, the knowledge and experience of a seasoned agent are likely to save you a lot of headaches and money. Without a lot of know-how, an inexperienced agent may even cause you to eventually lose out on the home of your dreams. If you’re looking for an experienced agent, there are several ways to go about finding one.
Ask for referrals. Previous happy customers are one of the most reliable ways of finding an experienced agent to work for you. Check with your friends and family to see if they can recommend a good agent who was able to help them along the way and teach them things they didn’t know. If your friends and family come up dry, do some online research to see if there are common agents local buyers and sellers around you use. While you’re there, see if there are any online reviews for these agents.
Check out who’s working in your area. One easy way to see who’s already representing clients in your area is to note the agent names on current signs in yards around you. If you’re a buyer, drive to your desired neighborhoods and check out signs there. Also, look at common listing sites like Zillow and note agent names you see that have listings in those areas. If you notice some agents are pretty active, it’s a safe bet they have some experience.
Interview them. Once you’ve located an agent either through a referral or other research, call them for an interview. This interaction can usually be in person or over the phone. If you do meet up in person, look for a few key qualities. Experienced agents will have a polished presentation and be able to answer all of your questions. Or, if there is a question they don’t know how to answer, they’ll research it and get back to you in a timely manner. Use this time to ask them whatever comes to mind as this will be a long and personal relationship.
